FDA'S NEW
WARNING MESSAGES:
The FDA's Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco
Control Act will require cigarette manufacturers to interchangeably display nine
new, more noticeable textural statements on their packages and in advertisements
beginning October 22, 2012. Rotating multi-colored and various health
warnings and graphics is an expensive process, and one that can be cost
prohibitive for smaller cigarette companies. In addition, the cost of
compliance is much larger on a per unit basis for new cigarette companies than
it is for existing tobacco manufacturers.
Some say the FDA would be better served looking at
other strategies aside from graphic labeling, which has not had the intended
effect in the countries in which it has been implemented. Though there is
a firm date that products sold from manufacturer to wholesaler or wholesaler to
retailer, no sell-through deadline has been established between the retailer and
the adult consumer. Based on other countries experience, there may not be
any impact on cigarette consumption as a result of the new packaging
regulations.
Warning Label #3
Warning: Cigarettes cause fatal lung disease.
Smoking causes lung
diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis and chronic airway obstruction.
About 90 percent of all deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease are caused
by smoking.
